Versailles is the one "beyond Paris" trip that comfortably fits in a single day — it's the reason it's the most-visited day trip from the city.
How far it actually is
The Palace sits about 20km southwest of central Paris. By RER C to Versailles Château – Rive Gauche, it's roughly a 10-minute walk from the station to the gates at Place d'Armes — the whole journey from central Paris typically runs 45 minutes to an hour door to door, including the walk at each end.
Is a day enough?
For the Palace's State Apartments and Hall of Mirrors alone, yes — a focused half-day works. The gardens are what change the calculus: they're vast, and seeing the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and Marie-Antoinette's Estate properly adds several more hours of walking. If you want the Palace, the gardens and the Trianon estate without rushing, treat it as a full day rather than a half-day, and check whether the Musical Fountains Shows are running that day — they change the crowd pattern and the best visiting order.
What to know before you go
- Book Palace tickets with a timed entry slot in advance — queues at the gate build quickly, especially in the morning.
- The gardens themselves are free to enter outside of the Musical Fountains Shows and Musical Gardens days, which have a separate paid ticket.
- Confirm your RER C branch before boarding — several call at different stations in the Versailles area, and Versailles Château – Rive Gauche is the one closest to the Palace gate.
