Paris with children is not a shorter version of Paris with adults. It is a different city — one that rewards playgrounds, ice cream, boats, and the freedom to stop.
Here is the day we build for families on our private tours.
9:00 — Croissants at a real boulangerie
Skip the hotel breakfast. Walk to a neighbourhood boulangerie and let the kids choose their own pain au chocolat. It costs 2 euros and it sets the tone.
9:30 — The Eiffel Tower from Trocadéro
Do not queue for the tower. Photograph it. The esplanade at Trocadéro gives you the full monument, room to run, and a carousel at the bottom of the hill. Twenty minutes here is worth two hours in a lift queue.
10:30 — Bateaux-Mouches on the Seine
A one-hour river cruise from Pont de l'Alma. Children get the city as a moving picture book — Louvre, Notre-Dame, Île de la Cité, Musée d'Orsay — with no walking required.
12:00 — Lunch in the 7th
Rue Cler, five minutes from the boat, is a pedestrian market street lined with family-friendly bistros. Order croque-monsieur, steak-frites, and a carafe d'eau.
13:30 — The Tuileries gardens
Between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries have a permanent carousel, a trampoline park in summer, model sailboats to rent at the central pond, and enormous ice creams from the Angelina kiosk.
15:00 — Notre-Dame from the outside
The cathedral has reopened, but a guided interior visit is not always right for younger children. The exterior — flying buttresses from Square Jean-XXIII, the front square with its bronze marker of Point Zéro — is more than enough.
15:45 — Berthillon on Île Saint-Louis
Cross the little bridge to Île Saint-Louis and queue at Berthillon, the oldest ice-cream maker in Paris since 1954. Salted caramel, wild strawberry, or dark chocolate.
16:30 — Playground and pause
Every arrondissement has a jardin with a playground. Square Barye at the tip of Île Saint-Louis is quiet and shaded. Sit down. Let them run. Do not schedule anything.
18:00 — Dinner early
French children eat late, but tourist children need dinner at 6:30. Most brasseries begin evening service at 7pm — arrive at 6:45 and you will get a table.
19:30 — Eiffel Tower sparkles
For the first five minutes of every hour after dark, the tower sparkles with 20,000 flashing lights. Watch it once from Champ-de-Mars. It is the best free show in Paris.
